Florence on the Elbe — baroque architecture, world-class galleries, the Semper Opera. The Zwinger, the Frauenkirche, the Brühl Terrace.

A baroque pearl on the banks of the Elbe

Dresden has rightly earned its nickname, Florence on the Elbe. A city almost levelled at the end of the Second World War rose from the ashes and today astonishes visitors with magnificent baroque architecture, world-class museums and a lively cultural scene. A walk through the old town is like a journey into the 18th century — at every step you come across splendid facades, monumental statues and perfectly proportioned squares. And it is less than an hour by car from our cottages.

The Zwinger, the Frauenkirche and the Semper Opera

The baroque Zwinger complex is one of the most beautiful palace buildings in Europe — its courtyard with fountains and pavilions is an architectural gem. The Frauenkirche, a monumental dome visible from across the city, was carefully rebuilt after the war from the original stones and today stands as a symbol of reconciliation and hope. The Semper Opera, where works by Richard Strauss premiered, is impressive both outside and in. If you get the chance, an evening performance at the Semperoper is an experience to remember for life.

The Old Masters Gallery and Raphael's Madonna

The Zwinger houses the world-famous Old Masters Gallery, with a collection ranking among the finest in Europe. Its main star is Raphael's Sistine Madonna — a painting whose two cherubs leaning on the parapet have become one of the most reproduced motifs in the history of art. But the gallery offers far more — works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Titian and dozens of other masters. Set aside at least 2 hours for the gallery, ideally a whole morning.

The Brühl Terrace and the Neustadt district

The Brühl Terrace, nicknamed the balcony of Europe, is a promenade above the Elbe with views of the river and the opposite bank. An ideal spot for a stroll or a coffee in one of the cafés. Beyond the Augustus Bridge begins Neustadt — the hipster part of Dresden, full of independent shops, cafés, street art and alternative culture. It is a completely different world from the baroque old town and is well worth a visit.

Practical tips for a trip from Lipnice

From our cottages you can reach Dresden in under an hour by car on the motorway. Parking in the centre is expensive — we recommend a Park & Ride on the edge of the city and continuing by public transport, which works splendidly. Allow a full day for the main sights. Around Altmarkt and the Frauenkirche you will find dozens of restaurants — from traditional Saxon pubs to international cuisine. Dresden combines very well with a visit to Bastei or Königstein on the way back.
