A table mountain overlooking the whole region

Děčínský Sněžník is a remarkable table mountain that rises 723 metres above the surrounding landscape like a natural viewing tower. Its flat summit, unlike the cone-shaped hills nearby, allows for an easy walk with views in every direction. In good visibility you can see the Ore Mountains, the spires of Dresden, the ridges of the Lusatian Mountains and, of course, all of Bohemian Switzerland with its rock towns and deep valleys. It is one of those places where you really grasp the scale and beauty of the region.

A stone lookout tower from the 19th century

On the summit of Sněžník stands a stone lookout tower built in 1864, an architectural gem in its own right. Its massive stonework has withstood wind and weather for more than 160 years. The climb up the spiral staircase to the viewing platform rewards you with one of the widest panoramas in all of Bohemian Switzerland. Next to the tower there is a restaurant with a terrace where you can enjoy lunch or a coffee with a view that would cost a fortune in other countries.

Two ways to the top — something for everyone

There are two ways to reach Sněžník. The comfortable option is to drive up the road to the car park just below the summit — from there it is a few minutes on foot. Ideal for families with small children or for seniors. The sportier option is the walk up from Děčín, which takes roughly 2 hours and leads through beautiful forest with views gradually opening up. The reward for the effort is the feeling that you have truly earned the view.

The best time to visit

Sněžník is beautiful in every season. Spring and autumn usually bring the best visibility and clear air — ideal for photography. In summer there is a pleasant breeze at the top even on days when the heat in the valley is unbearable. In winter, if there is enough snow, the climb has the romantic atmosphere of a snow-covered landscape. The summit restaurant is open from April to October. We recommend coming on a weekday, when it is noticeably quieter than at weekends. In autumn and winter the restaurant is closed, but the lookout tower stays open all year round and the views in the cold months are often the sharpest of all.
