The best-known viewpoint in Saxon Switzerland. An iconic stone bridge above a ravine with views of the Elbe.
A stone bridge above the ravine
The Basteibrücke — the iconic stone bridge spanning a deep ravine between rock towers — is one of the most photographed places in Central Europe. When you stand in the middle of the bridge and look down at the Elbe winding 194 metres below you, you feel something words cannot quite capture. The bridge was built in 1851 and replaced the original wooden footbridge. Today it is the symbol of all of Saxon Switzerland and a place you should see at least once in your life.
A natural gallery of rock towers
Bastei is not just the bridge — it is a whole complex of viewpoints, rock formations and historic ruins. Sandstone towers and pillars rise here like giant sculptures carved by nature over millions of years. A walk along the viewing paths leads you between the rocks with views of the river, the surrounding table mountains and endless forests. On a rocky spur you will also find the remains of the medieval castle of Neurathen, with a wooden bridge and an exhibition about life in a rock fortress.
The best light for photographers
Photographers come here at sunrise, when golden rays shine between the rock towers and mist rises from the valley. It is one of those moments worth getting up in the dark for. The evening light is just as beautiful — warm tones turn the sandstone into shades of gold and copper. During the day there are plenty of visitors, but in the morning and evening you have the viewpoints almost to yourself. Access to the bridge and all the viewpoints is free and open all year round.
How to get to Bastei from Lipnice
From our cottages you can reach Bastei by car in roughly 40 minutes. The large car park is paid (about 5 euros). The more romantic option is to arrive by boat along the Elbe to the little town of Rathen and climb up on foot from there — the ascent takes about 30 minutes on a steep forest path and is part of the experience in itself. The whole trip to Bastei takes a comfortable 2 to 3 hours. We recommend combining it with a visit to nearby Königstein or the thermal spa in Bad Schandau and making a full day of it in Saxon Switzerland. At Bastei there is also a hotel restaurant with a terrace and a view — an ideal spot for lunch.
