The sandstone towers of Bohemian Switzerland are among the finest climbing terrain in Central Europe. The local climbing tradition goes back to the 19th century.
Climbing areas
The most important climbing areas are the Jetřichovice walls, Tisá and the area around Děčínský Sněžník. The sandstone towers offer routes from easy to extremely demanding. The Jetřichovice rocks are ideal for beginners and advanced climbers alike — you will find over 500 routes of varying difficulty here. The Tisá area is known for its bizarre rock formations and shorter routes good for training.
Rules and tradition
Sandstone climbing has a long tradition in Bohemia and its own specific rules. Sandstone rocks may only be climbed when dry — wet sandstone is fragile and easily damaged. Chalk is banned; protection is placed on sandstone rings and slings. Before your first visit we recommend contacting a local guide who will explain the local rules and the best routes for your level.
Climbing with a guide
Local mountain guides offer courses and guided climbing for beginners and advanced climbers alike. A half-day trip to the rocks costs from 800 Kč per person and includes all the equipment. It is a great way to safely discover the magic of sandstone climbing and find hidden rock towers far from the tourist paths.
